Mathematical Modelling Workshop | Afternoon Session

August 30, 2024 @ 12:45 PM - 3:15 PM
$60

Facilitator |  Tim Budenberg | St John’s Grammar School

Friday 30th August | Term 3 | Week 6

Two new themes to Australian Curriculum Version 9 (and the new South Australian Curriculum) for Years 7-10 are algorithmic thinking and conducting statistical investigations. This workshop takes a dive into these two content areas, discusses different engaging approaches for teaching this content and presents one school’s response to these themes.

All classroom resources will be shared and we’d love it if teachers could bring any of their own work in this area they felt like sharing.

Morning Session | 9.30am to 12.00pm

The morning session will be algorithmic thinking, what is it, how can it help support and extend mathematical learning? Attendees will experience Year 7 and 8 ‘lessons’ where they can experience being students and learn how to create algorithms. This section of the workshop is in response to the fact that many teachers (like our students) have never coded or written algorithms before and therefore benefit from playing with and being taught some coding.

Lunch |  12.00pm to 12.45pm (catering FREE if both sessions are booked)

Please email any dietary needs

Afternoon Session |  12.45pm to 3.15pm

The afternoon session will investigate statistical investigations! Discussions here will include how students can be assessed, what types of projects are worthwhile, what other skills not mentioned in the curriculum (like Excel) are extremely worthwhile and to what extent can this be used as a precursor for SACE Investigations? I’ll also present how we’re meeting our school’s Reconciliation Action Plan goals using statistical investigations across Years 7 to 10 to learn, discuss and reflect upon the Closing the Gap report and the statistics arising from it.

Members $51.00  |  Non-members $60  |  per session
