HSMC – Competition Day

Each year more than 2,000 South Australian primary and secondary students participate in the Hamann School Mathematics Competition (HSMC) sponsored by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)-SA Section, with 2026 seeing the 65th edition of this well-established competition.

The HSMC aims to encourage interested and motivated students to enjoy the challenge of non-standard, thought-provoking mathematical problems. While some questions require extended knowledge and responses, the problem-solving format aims to develop lateral thinking and provide the widest range of students the opportunity to achieve success.

This annual competition is a well-established event across South Australian primary and secondary schools, with students from Government, Catholic and Independent schools participating across the four HSMC divisions: Primary (Years 6 and below), Junior (Years 7 and 8), Intermediate (Years 9 and 10), and Senior (Years 11 and 12).
