Building Learners confidence with Place Value, very large and small numbers.

Place Value is an essential component of our Hindu-Arabic number system but it is very complex. The four key principles of our PV system, the importance of both proportional and non-proportional materials and the essential nature of trading activities will be explored. The calculator as an exploratory tool will be included. Based on authentic, consistent and conclusive experience and research over time, this workshop will help children ‘fill the gap’ in their number understandings.

Rational number and real world connections (fractions, decimals and percentages)

In the workshop we will explore the diverse meanings of rational number and work with models, symbols, language and pictorial representations, to help students make friends with fractions.

We will further explore the equality of numbers making links with measurement, spacial thinking and money. The importance of estimation strategies and the use of benchmark numbers before working with the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, will be discussed and practiced.
