Unfolding Telescoping Series: Elegant Strategies for Simplifying Sums in Senior Secondary Mathematics

Jeshurun TanMorialta Secondary College

Telescoping series provide an elegant and powerful method for evaluating seemingly complex sums by revealing hidden structures that promote both curiosity and deep mathematical connection. This workshop is designed for high school mathematics teachers seeking to strengthen their content knowledge and refine their pedagogical approaches to teaching series in senior secondary classrooms. Participants will explore foundational principles through a carefully sequenced progression of examples, from simple difference-based expressions to more advanced forms involving partial fractions, with an emphasis on developing intuition and recognising when telescoping methods apply.

The session will also address common student misconceptions in algebraic manipulation and pattern recognition, alongside practical strategies to support effective teaching and differentiation. Through collaborative problem-solving and discussion, participants will engage with approaches that foster curiosity and build strong conceptual connections across topics such as sequences, mathematical induction, and infinite series. By the end of the workshop, teachers will be equipped with both a deeper understanding and classroom-ready resources to teach telescoping series with clarity, confidence, and creativity.
