SUMMARY:29th May | MASA Maths Leaders Forum
DESCRIPTION: MASA Maths Leaders Forum \n29th May 2024 – 4:30pm-5:30pm via ZOOM \nMASA Maths Leaders Forums provide a rare opportunity for Leaders of Maths in schools across SA to meet in a safe place to share experiences and support one another. It is free for MASA members. Each forum has a theme for guide the discussion\, in Term 2 the theme is “Working with Families” \nBuilding strong partnerships with families is essential for student success. In this forum\, we’ll delve into strategies for effective communication\, fostering parental involvement\, and addressing challenges. As mathematics leaders\, we play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between home and school. Let’s explore ways to create a supportive environment where families actively engage in their child’s mathematical education. \n. \n

SUMMARY:THE BEE NUMBERS: Some Surprises!
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL PRESENTATION\nTHE BEE NUMBERS: Some Surprises!\nFacilitator: Dr James Tanton | Mathematical Association of America\nDate & Time: Tuesday 26 March | 6.00pm to 7.00pm\nVenue: MASA Office | Building D\, 80 Payneham Road\, Stepney\nCost: $15.00 (Register Here)\nJoin James after the event for dinner (at own cost) at The Maid Hotel | 1 Magill Road\, Stepney\nThe Fibonacci numbers 1\,1\,2\,3\,5\, 8\, 13\, … (aka the Bee numbers or the Hemachandra numbers) have been studied and probed and generalized and analysed in almost every possible way for centuries. Let’s probe and prod some more!\nAllow me to surprise you with some new appearances of these famous numbers–and invite you to discover some more of your own! \nJames Tanton (PhD. Mathematics\, Princeton University\, 1994) is a research mathematician deeply interested in bridging the gap between the mathematics experienced by school students and the creative mathematics practiced and explored by mathematicians. He worked as a college professor for a decade\, as a high-school teacher for a decade\, and is now the Mathematician in Residence at the Mathematical Association of America in Washington D.C.\nJames writes math books – with publishers and through his own self-published means. He gives math talks and conducts math workshops all across the continent and overseas. He guides students and he guides teachers. He publishes articles and papers\, creating and doing new math. And he shares the mathematical experience with teachers and students of all ages\, helping them publish research results too! \n(Register Here)

SUMMARY:Increasing Technology in the Classroom | Workshop 1 | Wednesday 13th March
DESCRIPTION:How technology can improve outcomes for students and teachers\nFour one-hour sessions will take place on:\nWorkshop 1 Wednesday 13th March – (Term 1\, Week 7) \nHayden Tronnolone and Alix Verdon: \nTitle:10 tips for teaching in the Age of AI \nJoin us for a workshop where Flinders University and ASMS staff share their journeys in AI within education. Explore the potential of using generative AI in assessment\, as well as techniques for designing AI resilient assessment. Hear about our respective learnings this year as we’ve developed processes and guidelines to support teachers and students in using AI\, with our 10 tips for teaching in the age of AI. \n(Click here to register) \nWorkshop 2 Tuesday 26th March – (Term 1\, Week 9)\nRebecca Garrett and Kylie Lester: \nTitle Navigating Assessment in a World of AI \nThis workshop will provide attendees with the opportunity to share their experiences with AI in the classroom. Kylie and Rebecca will discuss the ethics around the use of AI\, share tips for task design\, demonstrate examples of ways to use AI tools to plan and create resources\, and share methods to be transparent with students about their use of AI tools in assessment. If you have resources to share\, we encourage you to bring them along. \nWorkshop 3 Thursday 30th May – (Term 2\, week 5)\nTim Bond: \nTitle: AI-Active Task Design \nWhat if I told you that you could have students using generative AI within assessments without compromising the integrity of the assessment? In this workshop\, we’re going to explore what AI-active task design can look like\, and how you can use this approach to help students develop the knowledge\, skills\, and understanding of mathematics and mathematical research that are the focus of mathematical investigations. \nWorkshop 4 Tuesday 18th June – (Term 2\, week 8) \nRoss Riach: \nTitle:Optimising the “M” in STEM : Effectively selecting and evaluating technology to promote engagement and innovation in mathematics \nThis workshop would be a combination of sharing technological resources and tools to create more engaging and immersive maths lessons but with the focus on how to evaluate their effectiveness and choose what suits your needs. \nAll workshops will be held at MASA Office\, $40 per workshop.
