SUMMARY:MTQ | National Mathematics Talent Quest | NATIONAL JUDGING
DESCRIPTION:About the National Maths Talent Quest\nThe National Mathematics Talent Quest (MTQ) is a national competition that encourages students to carry out a real world mathematically-based investigations at home or in their classes. When participating in the MTQ\, students learn to think and work like a mathematician. \nThe MTQ is open to all students from Foundation to Year 12. Students in each year level compete with each other. For each year\, there are three categories: individual\, group and class entries. For example\, a student may undertake their own project at home or they may participate in a project that the whole class would work on together under the supervision of their teacher. \nThe project entries are submitted to the students’ school for the teachers to judge. The school can put forward the best entries from each school into a state or territory competition. The best entries from each state or territory are then put forward to the national competition. \nStudents typically work on their projects in Term 2 or early Term 3. The schools judge the projects in early August each year and send their best projects to the AAMT state or territory association by late August.  The national judging usually takes place in September each year. \nThe process for participating may be different from state to state. In some places\, entries for the MTQ are combined with other activities (for example the Queensland Science Contest (Mathematics Category). Students should check this with their teachers.

SUMMARY:Mathematical Modelling Workshop | Afternoon Session
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator |  Tim Budenberg | St John’s Grammar School\nFriday 30th August | Term 3 | Week 6\nTwo new themes to Australian Curriculum Version 9 (and the new South Australian Curriculum) for Years 7-10 are algorithmic thinking and conducting statistical investigations. This workshop takes a dive into these two content areas\, discusses different engaging approaches for teaching this content and presents one school’s response to these themes. \nAll classroom resources will be shared and we’d love it if teachers could bring any of their own work in this area they felt like sharing. \nMorning Session | 9.30am to 12.00pm\nThe morning session will be algorithmic thinking\, what is it\, how can it help support and extend mathematical learning? Attendees will experience Year 7 and 8 ‘lessons’ where they can experience being students and learn how to create algorithms. This section of the workshop is in response to the fact that many teachers (like our students) have never coded or written algorithms before and therefore benefit from playing with and being taught some coding. \nLunch |  12.00pm to 12.45pm (catering FREE if both sessions are booked)\nPlease email any dietary needs \nAfternoon Session |  12.45pm to 3.15pm\nThe afternoon session will investigate statistical investigations! Discussions here will include how students can be assessed\, what types of projects are worthwhile\, what other skills not mentioned in the curriculum (like Excel) are extremely worthwhile and to what extent can this be used as a precursor for SACE Investigations? I’ll also present how we’re meeting our school’s Reconciliation Action Plan goals using statistical investigations across Years 7 to 10 to learn\, discuss and reflect upon the Closing the Gap report and the statistics arising from it. \nMembers $51.00  |  Non-members $60  |  per session\n(click here to register)\nAll workshops will be held at the MASA Office | Building D\, 80 Payneham Road\, Stepney SA 5069
