Join Michael Minas to explore one of the most debated questions in maths education: should we prioritise explicit teaching of skills and concepts; or adopt a problem-solving approach that encourages inquiry and discovery?

WORKSHOP VENUE  –   MASA (Building D; 80 Payneham Road  STEPNEY  SA  5069 (Free onsite parking available.)

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW  –  This in-person professional learning day will invite primary and middle school educators (foundation to Year 9) to unpack what each side of the debate looks like in practice and consider the impact on student understanding, confidence and achievement.

By exploring practical examples, classroom scenarios, and collaborative discussions you will have the chance to challenge the idea that this is an “either/or” decision and instead explore a framework for integrating explicit teaching with rich problem-solving opportunities.

Teachers will explore strategies for balancing these approaches—when to model and scaffold, when to step back, and how to design lessons that build deep conceptual understanding.

By the end of the day, participants will:

  • Develop a clearer understanding of explicit teaching and problem-solving pedagogies
  • Reflect on their own beliefs and current classroom practices
  • Identify ways to intentionally combine both approaches in their teaching
  • Leave with practical strategies and lesson ideas ready to implement

This session is ideal for teachers looking to refine their mathematics practice and create classrooms where all students can succeed as confident and capable mathematicians.
