MASA Casual Meet-Up: Building Thinking Classrooms
Friday 13th March 2026
Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics is an educational approach created by Peter Liljedahl, a professor at Simon Fraser University. After seeing evidence of student disengagement, Liljedahl spent 15 years researching one key question: How can we get more students to think—and think longer?
His work led to 14 research-based teaching practices that challenge traditional classroom norms and significantly boost student thinking and learning. These practices also strengthen collaboration, perseverance, risk-taking, equity, and student ownership.
Since its release in 2020, the model has gained global traction, with teachers worldwide reporting greater student engagement and enthusiasm for learning mathematics.
Join the Building Thinking Classrooms discussion session, which will focus on teaching simple and compound interest to Year 9–10 students through a convergent task.
